16 Icelanders play golf on American College/University golfteams 2014/2015

Now the spring season for Iceland´s golf elite is starting … and most are playing golf on golfteams in North America.

Golf 1 is currently following 16 Icelandic golfers, who are playing golf collegically in the States in the 2014-2015 golfseason.

Icelanders are only 325.671 by the end of 2014 so 16 playing golf at such a high level is really a remarkable ratio, which only reflects the fact that golf is the 2nd most popular sport in Iceland.

The dream of many young Icelandic golfers is to play golf in an American College or Universtiy golfteam, so the following golfers are living their dream.

It might be added here that in the fall season of 2015 two other excellent Icelandic golfers will be playing golf collegically in the States. They are Bjarki Pétursson from the Golf Club of Borgarnes (GB) and Gísli Sveinbergsson og Golf Club Keilir (GK) in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland.

Gísli is a.o. the current winner of the prestigious Duke of York  Young Champions Trophy 2014, joining two other Icelanders, who both play on College golf teams in the States, who have won the title before.

The Icelandic golfers who play on College/University golfteams in the 2014-2015 season are the following (Please note that the photos  above and below were taken on the 4th tournament of the Eimskip-series, i.e. the Icelandic Championship in Strokeplay, held at the Leirdals golfcourse in Kópavogur, home of GKG on the 24th-27th of July 2014.

Men:

Andri Már Björnsson and Emil Þór Ragnarsson play on the Nicholls State golfteam in Louisiana.  Andri Már is from the Golf Club of Reykjavík (abbr.: GR).

Emil Þór from the Golf Club of Kópavogur (abbr.: GKG) and Garðarbær is that Club´s current Club Champion 2014.  GR is the biggest Golf Club in Iceland whereas GKG is the second biggest, going by membership.

Ari Magnússon, GKG  and Theodór Karlsson, from the Golf Club of Mosfellsbær (GM) play golf on the University of Arkansas at Monticello golfteam.

Dagur Ebenezersson, GM,  is playing on the Catawba College Men´s Golf Team in North-Carolina.

Guðmundur Ágúst Kristjánsson, GR is playing golf on the ETSU Bucs Men´s Golf Team in Tennessee.  Guðmundur Ágúst a.o. is the winner of the prestigious Duke of York  Young Champions Trophy 2010.

Haraldur Franklín Magnús, GR is playing with the Ragin Cajuns at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette.  Haraldur Franklín is a.o. the Icelandic Champion in both Match and Stroke Play 2012.

Hrafn Guðlaugsson, GSE, i.e. the Golf Club Setberg in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland is playing with the Faulkner Eagles in Alabama.

Ragnar Már Garðarson, GKG, plays on the McNeese State University´s golfteam in Lake Charles, Louisiana.  Ragnar Már a.o. is the winner of the prestigious Duke of York  Young Champions Trophy 2012.

Rúnar Arnórsson from Golf Club Keilir (GK) in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland is playing with the University of Minnesota Gophers.

Women: 

Berglind Björnsdóttir, GR, plays on the Women´s Golf Team of UNCG i.e. the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.

Guðrún Brá Björgvinsdóttir, GK, plays on the Women´s Golf Team of Fresno State, The Bulldogs, in California.

Gunnhildur Kristjánsdóttir, GKG and Sunna Víðisdóttir, GR are both playing on the Women´s Golf Team of Elon in North Carolina.

Íris Katla Guðmundsdóttir, GR, plays on the Women´s Golf Team „The Royals” at Queens University of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Stefanía Kristín Valgeirsdóttir, from the Golf Club Akureyri (abbr.: GA) in the North of Iceland plays golf on the Women´s Golf Team of the Falcons at Pfeiffer University in North Carolina.  Stefanía Kristín is the current women´s Club Champion of GA in 2014.
