88 Icelanders playing golf in Sandgerði – Iceland – January 12th 2013?

There is a golftournament scheduled in Sandgerði, Iceland on January 12th 2013. One might think that it would be to cold to play, yet there are 88 contestants thereof 7 women.

The weatherforcast is „favorable” for golfplay in Iceland tomorrow Saturday, January 12th 2013 – no snow – a gentle breeze and the temperature 3-4° albeit it´s supposed to go down to 0° Celsius around noon. Typically for Iceland the sun is supposed to shine a little, but one can also expect a little snow to fall and in the afternoon it will rain.  You get a bag of „all kinds of everything” weather.

Prizes are from Golfbúðin in Hafnarfjörður (lit: golf store) which sells all sorts of golf equipment 3 being awarded for most points garnered according to the Stabbleford points system and 1 prize is awarded to the winner in the stroke play competition. Both first prizes are worth 15.000 Icelandic kronas (approx. $ 120)

The entrance fee in this golf tournament in the middle of winter in Iceland is 2.500 Icelandic kronas (approx. $ 20) and included in the prize is a bowl of hot soup and bread, which is extremely nice to have after an enjoyable round of golf in Sandgerði.

By the way the golfcourse in Sandgerði is one of two golfcourses which are closest to the International airport of Keflavík – one which you should absolutely make a point of playing if you come to Iceland and one which is highly accessible due to its proximity to the airport.
