Introducing: Stefán Teitur Þórðarson, who at age 12 aced the 16th at Golf Club Borgarnes

Stefán Teitur Þórðarson, 13 yrs., aced the 16th at Golf Club Borgarnes last year, whilst taking part in the Icelandic Junior Match Play Championship held by the Icelandic Golf Association on July 26th 2011 at Hamarsvöllur in Borgarnes. Then he was only 12 years old. He is from Akranes, a town approximately a 45 minutes drive from Reykjavík with a population of 6542 (as of February 14th 2012 according to the Icelandic Bureau of Statistics).

Stefán Teitur is also an avid soccer player and would love to play soccer professionally in the future. In all likelihood he will since many members of his family have been professional soccer players and played abroad. When Stefán Teitur aced the 16th on Hamarsvöllur in Borgarnes, Golf 1 interviewed Stefán Teitur, which was a true pleasure, since he´s mature beyond his years and a true sportsman. Here goes the interview:

Member of which Golf Club are you?: The Golf Club Leynir (GL) in Akranes.

Where and when were you born?  In Akranes, October 16th 1998.

Where were raised?  My family moved to Sweden when I was 2 months old and I lived there the first 2 years of my life – then I lived 3 months in Akureyri (the capital of North Iceland with 10.293 inhabitants according to the Icelandic Bureau of Statistics) and after that we moved to Akranes and I have lived here ever since.

What is your familystatus?  I have 1 brother, who´s 16, Þórður and a 5 year old sister, Katrín.  My dad sometimes plays golf and my mom plays now and then.

When did you start playing golf? Four years ago, when I was 8-9 years old.

Why did you start playing golf? All my friends played golf and I went on the course with them and enjoyed it.

What is your occupation? I´m a student. I go to the 8th class in Grundarskóli, Akranes.

What do you prefer a parkland or links style golfcourse? I prefer parkland golfcourses.

What do you prefer match play competitions or stroke play? Stroke play, because then one isn´t competing against someone else – one has only oneself to think about.

What is your favorite golfcourse in Iceland? Garðavöllur in Akranes. (A beautiful 18 hole golfcourse, which will be introduced later here on Golf 1).

What is your favorite golfcourse anywhere else in the world except for Iceland? I have always wanted to play golf on St. Andrews in Scotland.

What is the most special golfcourse you have played golf on and why? Grafarholtsvöllur (An 18 hole par-71 golfcourse – one of The Golfclub of Reykjavík´s (GR) 3 golfcourses). The reason: because of the layout.

What is your handicap?  14,3

What is your best score and on which golfcourse did you achieve it? A 79 on Garðavöllur (the Club Championship) and another 79  on Hamarsvöllur in Borgarnes (at the Junior Match Play Championship).

How long is your longest drive? I think 245 meters, but I got alot of tailwind (that was on the 16th in Akranes, in the beginning of July 2011).

What is your biggest accomplishment in golf up till this day? To ace the 16th on Hamarsvöllur in Borgarnes.

What snack do you have in your bag? I have a sandwich and a Corny proteinbar.

Have you participated in any other sports? Yes, in soccer and badminton with ÍA.

What is your favorite food, your favorite drink, your favorite music, your favorite movie and your favorite book?  My favorite food is Chicken in mangosauce, my favorite drink is orangejuice; my favorite music, well I´m not sure Usher and sometimes rapp, Eminem all types of music; my favorite movie is Bruce Almighty, my favorite book is Rauðu augun (The Red Eyes) by Icelandic author Helgi Jónsson (It´s a story about a Turkish Pirate that attacks the Vestmanna Islands).

 What are your favorite golfers name 1 female and 1 male golfer? Female: Vadís Þóra, she´s my cousin (…and also one of Iceland´s best female golfer, and will be introduced here on Golf 1 later) Male: Camillo Vilegas

What is your favorite club? The 6-iron.

Have you been to a golf instructor? Yes, Karl Ómar, he´s the golf instructor here in Akranes.

Are you superstitious? No.

What is your maingoal in golf and in life? In golf: to get as far as I can, to reach my potential. My maingoal in life is to stay healthy and live a healthy life.

What do you like the best about golf? The golfcourses, they are in such beautiful environment.

What´s in the bag? My driver, a 3-tree, a hybrid, a 5-iron, 6-iron, 7-iron, 8-iron, 9-iron, my 48° and 56° wedges and my putter.

And lastly: Do you have some advice for other golfers? One always has to stay calm in stressful situations.
