Reflection on what happened in the week November 5th – November 11th 2012 in Golf in Iceland

Golf1 will start its reflection articles on some of the main events that took place in golf in Iceland or among Icelandic golfers playing abroad.  We will start by covering what happened by looking into the main news for this past week – Monday, November 5th through Sunday, November 11th 2012.

There are 24 reflection articles coming your way – covering the golf summer in Iceland and the autumn/fall… this being the first one.  The next one will be on what happened in the week Monday May 28th-  Sunday June 3rd and we´ll keep writing until we reach November 5th.

But lets see what happened this past week:

First lets take a look at Icelandic golfers playing on US College Teams:

On November 5th-6th Andri Þór Björnsson played with his golfteam the Geaux Colonels in Nicholls State, Louisiana, in the Red Wolf Fall Beach Classic. The tournament was being held in the Peninsula Golf Club in Gulf Shores, Alabama. There were 70 participants from 13 Universities and Colleges. Andri Þór had the best score of his golfteam, 229 strokes (79 68 82) and finished T-32.  The Geaux Colonels finished in 10th position.

On November 5th-7th Guðmundur Ágúst Kristjánsson and his golfteam, The Bucs at Eastern Tennessee State Universitiy (ETSU) played in the Warrior Wave Intercollegiate which took place at Makai Golf Club in Princeville,  Hawaii. There were 80 participants from 16 Universities.  There is a 10 hr. time difference between Iceland and Hawaii and when Guðmundur Ágúst started playing the final round at 8 o´clock in the morning, we here in Iceland couldn´t start following his score untill hrs. 18:00.

Guðmundur Ágúst finished on an even par, 216 strokes (74 70 72) and finished in the top-20  i.e. was T-13 along with 4 others. His next tournament isn´t untill Monday, February 4th 2013 in Jacksonville, Florida i.e. the  Sea Best Invitational.

Two Icelanders, Þórður Rafn Gissurarson and Alexander Aron Gylfason are participating in the  NGA Pro Tour – Bridgestone Winter Series, in Florida. This week, on Tuesday, November 6th the 3rd 3 day tournament commenced. It took place at the Shingle Creek golfcourse in Orlando. The participants were 106 and only the top 35 and ties continued to play for a paycheck on the third day.  Unfortunately neither Þórður Rafn nor Alexander Aron made the cut this week. Oh well, there are still 9 tournaments to go in the series … and better luck next time…

Two of Iceland´s golf pro´s were taking part in tournaments in Europe this past week:

Birgir Leifur Hafþórsson was one of 303 who participated in the 2nd stage of Q-school aspiring to get his card for the European Tour 2013. The competition took place November 7th-10th.  Unfortunately he didn´t make the cut this time and is therefore not in the group of 73, who will play in the final stage of Q-school at the PGA Catalunya golfcourse in Girona, Spain. The 2nd stage of the qualifying tournament took place in 4 venues across Spain and the one Birgir Leifur participated in was held in El Valle, Murcia, November 7th. through November 10th 2012.

Tinna Jóhannsdóttir, played in an event on the LET Access Tour, the Banesto Tour Valencia. The venue was Golf Club Escorpión in Valencia, Spain and the event took place November 8th-November 10th.  Unfortunately she didn´t make the cut. She had a score of 8 over par, 152 strokes  (75 77) and was 4 strokes away from making the cut. Her next tournament will be the Lalla Aïcha Tour School,i.e. Q-school LET 2013, which is in two stages the former December 6th-9th and the latter December 13th-17th 2012.  The venue is Al Maaden Golf and Amelkis Golf Club in Marrakech, Marocco.

Lastly in this brief overview there´s room to mention that on November 8th the main meeting of the Golf Club at Hella, in Rangárvellir took place.  Members of the Club were being chosen in committees and on the board of the Club. As in previous years Óskar Pálsson got re-elected chairman and his wife Katrín Björg Aðalbjörnsdóttir, treasurer.
