Golf Iceland at the International Golf Travel Mart in Portugal

Earlier this month, November 11th-16th the International Golf Travel Mart  was held in Portugal. This is an annual event, which has drawn attention to Iceland as a golf destination. Iceland one of 6 „hidden golf travel destination pearls”

A year ago at one of the largest Golf-Travel Fairs, which was held in Turkey, Iceland was chosen one of 6 „hidden pearls” when it comes to golf travel destinations. IAGTO (The Global Golf Tourism Organisation) was the one that presented the award, and 160 golfwriters from 33 countries comprised the panel of judges. The other hidden golf travel destination gems along with Iceland were Colombia, The State of Mississippi, India, Galicia in Spain and Bulgaria. Nökkvi Gunnarsson T-7 in The Davenport Classic!!!

Nökkvi Gunnarsson, (from Golf Club Nes in Iceland) participated in The Davenport Classic, which is a tournament on the Florida Professional Golf Tour.  He claimed a T-7 result in the tournament with an excellent performance. TPC Sawgrass and Old Course St. Andrews are the favorite golfcourses of Icelanders

We here on Golf 1 have in the approximately 1 year since the website started interviewed over 100 Icelandic golfers and 80 of those interviews have already been published. Among the questions asked were what were the interviewees favorite golfcourse abroad. Now we´ve done a little surrvey and it appears that the „craddle of golf” St. Andrews Old Course along with TPC Sawgrass in Florida are the favorites. Reflection on what happened in the week May 28th- June 3rd 2012 in Golf in Iceland

In the week May 28th-June 3rd 2012 the golfsummer in Iceland was starting and most Golf Clubs, which close during the winter time had by now opened anew.  There are many open golf tournaments in Iceland during the summer in which everyone, who has handicap 36  (unless otherwise mentioned) and pays the rather low tournament fee in most cases, can participate. Foreign golfers are welcome – and if you come to Iceland you should at least try to participate in 1 tournament, just to get the experience of having played in an Icelandic golf tournament. Introducing Icelanders who play on US College Golf teams no. 7: Berglind Björnsdóttir

Berglind Björnsdóttir is one of about twenty Icelanders who study and play golf on US College golfteams. In Iceland Berglind plays golf for Iceland´s largest Golf Club – The Golf Club of Reykjavík (abbrev. GR).  She also studies and plays golf with the ladies golfteam of UNCG  (short for the  University of North Carolina, Greensboro), It was remarkable how much her game had improved when she returned to Iceland this past summer – she had lowered her handicap drastically in a short amount of time. NGA Pro Tour: Þórður Rafn withdrew from the 4th tournament in Harmony

After a dissapointing first round of 5 over par, 77 strokes Þórður Rafn Gissurarson, GR (i.e. the Golf Club of Reykjavík), withdrew himself from the 4th tournament of the NGA Pro Tour – Bridgestone Winter Series, which was held November 13th through November 15th 2012 at the Harmony Golf Preserve, í Harmony, Florida. Birgir Leifur Hafþórsson didn´t make the cut at the 2nd stage PGA Q-school at Plantation

Þórður Rafn Gissurarson is one of Iceland´s most talented golfers. At the time being he is participating in the NGA Pro Tour – Bridgestone Winter Series in Florida.
