Helgi Birkir Þórisson and Ásgeir Eiríksson won in the golftournament in Sandgerði – Iceland – January 12th 2013!!!

It must come as a surprise that golftournaments are being held in Iceland in the middle of winter in a temperature of 0° Celsius / 32 Fahrenheit).  The road from Hafnarfjörður to Sandgerði was so slippery that when Golf 1´s reporter drove it, she passed by 3 car accidents, where cars had weered off the icy road. Yet, it is not astonishing that a golftournment is being held, once conditions to have one reach the minimum, considering the huge amount of interest there is in playing golf in Iceland. Erró – Sandgerði´s little golfdog

Yesterday there was a golftournament in the middle of winter in Sandgerði, a little town in the South-West of Iceland of  1683 inhabitants ; Iceland´s 26th most populated municipality; (as of January 2011). 94 golfers were competing in a temperature of 0° Celsius (32° Fahrenheit), at least the sun shone and there wasn´t much wind and there was no snow on the golf course. 88 Icelanders playing golf in Sandgerði – Iceland – January 12th 2013?

There is a golftournament scheduled in Sandgerði, Iceland on January 12th 2013. One might think that it would be to cold to play, yet there are 88 contestants thereof 7 women. The weatherforcast is „favorable” for golfplay in Iceland tomorrow Saturday, January 12th 2013 – no snow – a gentle breeze and the temperature 3-4° albeit it´s supposed to go down to 0° Celsius around noon. Fannar Ingi Steingrímsson is an amazing 14 year old Icelandic golfer!

Fannar Ingi Steingrímsson is only 14 years old, yet he is at this young age one of Iceland´s most promising young golfers. He is from a beautiful town in the South of Iceland, Hveragerði, which is famous for its numerous hot springs and fumaroles. Axel Bóasson is one of those Icelanders who play golf collegically in the US, on the Mississippi State´s Bulldog´s golfteam. Axel is without doubt one of Iceland´s best golfers. Reflection on what happened in the week June 11th – June 17th 2012 in Golf in Iceland

Now we´ll continue raconteuring a few of the highlights in Icelandic golf this past summer. On June 12th women in the „free enterprise association” i.e. women who own their own businesses in Iceland got together and held a tournament on the new 18 hole golfcourse in Grindavík (in the South of Iceland; en route from Keflavík where Icelands only international airport is situated to Reykjavík  – among attractions worth mentioning is the Blue Lagoon in Grindavík and when you come to Iceland it´s a great idea to combine the two; first play a round on the golfcourse in Grindavík and then relax in the beautiful, Blue Lagoon). A new golfcourse to open in Siglufjörður – near the Arctic Circle

Siglufjörður is a small village in the North of Iceland and its current number of inhabitants (according to the  Statistics Office in Iceland as of February 14th 2012) are 1217; 609 male and 608 female. Siglufjörður used to be the commercial capital of Iceland early in the 20th century in the Herring Era, when herring was the Iceland´s main export. Around 1968 the herring vanished and so did most of the inhabitants of Siglufjörður, who moved to other parts of the island. Reflection on what happened in the week June 4th – June 10th 2012 in Golf in Iceland

At the beginning of this new year, 2013, Golf 1 will continue reflecting on a few of the highlights of the golfscene in Iceland last year, 2012 and we´ll start where we left of with a reflection on the week of June 4th – June 10th. Icelandic golfers Þórður Rafn Gissurarson and Stefán Már Stefánsson both from Golfclub Reykjavík (abbrev. GR) competed in the Land Fleesensee Classic which is a tournament on the German EPD 3rd tier tour. The tournament was held in Fleesensee, Germany on June 5th -June 7th.
