Reflection on what happened in the week 16th-22nd of April 2012 in Golf in Iceland no.1: Guðrún Brá Björgvinsdóttir T-9 at the Irish Girls U-18 Open Stroke Play Championship

Six girls from the Golf Club Keilir in Hafnarfjörður competed in the Irish Girls U-18 Open Stroke Play Championship, held at Roganstown Hotel & Golf Club, in County Meath, Ireland, where you´ll also find the fabulous Nicklaus designed Killeen Castle golfcourse, venue of the Solheim Cup 2011.  The Irish Girls U-18 Open Stroke Play Championship was held 21st-22nd of April 2012.

After the first two rounds played on April 21st there was a cut and only the 3 best players of each team continued.  Hildur Rún Guðjónsdóttir, Högna Kristbjörg Knútsdóttir and Sara Margrét Hinriksdóttir didn´t make the cut this time so Guðrún Brá Björgvinsdóttir, Saga Ísafold Arnarsdóttir and Anna Sólveig Snorradóttir continued to play on the 2nd day.

Guðrún Brá Björgvinsdóttir played best of the team from Keilir, Iceland; was in 4th place after the 1st round and carded a top-10 finish, i.e. was T-9 with a combined score of 229 strokes (73 76 80) in the end.

Anna Sólveig Snorradóttir had a combined score of 249 strokes (82 86 81 ) and ended up in 46th place and   Saga Ísafold Arnarsdóttir had a combined score of 253 strokes (87 78 88) and ended up in 49th place.

One of the amazing Maguire twins from Ireland won, i.e. Leona Maguire with an impressive margin of 8 strokes from France´s  Manon Molle and Matthilda Cappeliez, who shared 2nd place.

Here in Iceland we are all proud of „our girls” competing in the tournament and hope that there will be more opportunities for our youth to compete abroad all year round, where the weather conditions are better than here in Iceland. This is extremely important exercise and will come of good use in the competitions to come this summer.
