Reflection on what happened in the week May 21st-27th 2012 in Golf in Iceland

On May 21st-May 23rd 2012 Stefán Már Stefánsson, GR (abbreviation for Golf Club Reykjavik) took part in the  Hauschlag NÖ Open tournament, which is part of  the German EPD Tour.  He had an accumulated score of 4 under par (73 67 72) and ended in the 10th position for which he got a check of € 745. The German golfer Marcel Haremza won with a score of 16 under par.

On May 25th-May 27th the 1st tournament of the Eimskip Series took place at Golf Club Suðurnes (GS) in Keflavík.  On the Eimskip Series which is a Series of 6 tournaments organized by the Icelandic Golf Association participants get points according to their outcome in each tourment, most 1500 points for winning a tournament.  Two of those tournaments are the Icelandic Championship in Stroke Play and the Icelandic Championship in Match Play. Each tournament is a 54 hole tournament.

In the Eimskip Series only Iceland´s best participate i.e. those with the lowest handicap.

This year, there was a delay due to wind on the first day and scores rather high due to the windy conditions. In the end this 1st tournament of the Eimskip series was shortened to a 36 hole tournament. Many participants had just returned from College Golf in the States or from tournaments in Europe and were getting used to the harsh Icelandic weather and slow greens. Scores were rather high.

The winners in this 1st tournament of 6 in the Eimskip series were our professional golfer Birgir Leifur Hafþórsson and Ólafía Þórunn Kristinsdóttir, who a.o. plays golf with the Wake Forest golfteam in North Carolina.
