Reflection on what happened in the world of golf last week no. 2: Icelanders in US College Golf – Ólafía Þórunn Kristinsdóttir T-2 at ACC Women´s Golf Championship
There are about 12 Icelandic golfers who play golf on US College Golf Teams (these golfers will be introduced later here on Golf 1). Three of „our” young Icelandic golfers were competing with their teams in the US this weekend and others will start today on Monday. Let´s talk a bit about the three competing this past weekend: Ólafía Þórunn Kristinsdóttir, Ólafur Björn Loftsson and Berglind Björnsdóttir.
Ólafía Þórunn Kristinsdóttir
The first one worth mentioning is our gorgeous Ólafía Þórunn Kristinsdóttir, Icelandic Champion in both Match and Stroke Play 2011. In Iceland she´s member of Iceland´s largest golfclub, the Golf Club in Reykjavik (GR). She plays golf on the Wake Forest Golf Team, a.o. with Cheyenne Woods, niece of the best golfer in the world, Tiger Woods.
This weekend Wake Forest and Ólafía Þórunn participated in the ACC Women´s Golf Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in North-Carolina. The course was extremely difficult and scores below par rare. Especially the extremely fast greens made good putting difficult. Getting par was like getting birdie on any given day. However Ólafía Þórunn managed two rounds under par; she shot á -1 under par (70) the first day and a -3 under par (68) in the final round, which was broadcast live on ACC.com and made us Icelanders extremely proud of her!
She finished the tournament T-2 along with Alejandra Cangrejo, from Duke University and Marina Salinas from Florida State. Phsychology major Lindy Duncan, twice named ACC´s Women Golfer of the year won the tournament.

Ólafur Björn Loftsson
Ólafur Björn Loftsson is quite familiar with the Sedgefield golfcourse in Greensboro, North-Carolina, where Ólafía Þórunn played yesterday because he took part in the Wyndham Championship a tournament held each year at Sedgefield, on the PGA Tour. Ólafur competed last year in the tournament and was the first Icelander to play on the PGA Tour. He missed the cut by one stroke. A Wake Forest alumni, Webb Simpson won the tournment. Ólafur Björn had earned the right to play as an amateur in the tournament since he won the Cardinal tournament earlier.
In Iceland Ólafur Björn is member of the Golf Club of Nes (Icelandic: Nesklúbburinn). He also is the Icelandic Champion in Stroke Play 2009 (He won after a most amazing and memorable final round where he needed 4 birdies on the last 4 holes in Grafarholt (One of GR´s (Iceland´s largest Golf Club) 3 golfcourses) and got the job done!
In the States he plays on the Golfteam of the Charlotte 49ers. Ólafur Björn and the Niners played this weekend on the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational. This was a 2 day tournament taking place on the Finkbine golfcourse in Iowa City, Iowa. Participants were 60 from 11 Colleges.
Ólafur Björn´s combined score was a +3 over par, 219 strokes (75 72 72) and he finished T-21. He had the 2nd best score of the Nineres this time.
Nate McCoy, Iowa State, won the tournament convincingly at -14 under par, 202 strokes (68 65 69).
The Niners finished in 4th place.

Berglind Björnsdóttir
Berglind Björnsdóttir is also playing in the US College Golf circuit. She just started at UNCG and yesterday she and her teammates started their 1st round at the Southern Conference Champion in Moss Creek Golf Club on Hilton Head Island in South-Carolina. This is a 3 day tournament, going from April 15th through April 17th 2012. There are 50 participants from 10 Colleges.
Yesterday Berglind carded a +7 over par score, i.e. a 79 and is T-16. Her team, UNCG on the other hand is in 1. place and Berglind´s score counts, since she had the 4th best score on her team.
