Unique Iceland: What to do in Reykjavík?
Iceland is a holiday destination of extremes…. or so it says in this video made by Icelandair CLICK HERE:
Here you´ll find an entertaining and informative documentary about Reykjavík, its surrounding countryside and the natural gems of Iceland.
Here you´ll a.o. get a glimps of the Blue Lagoon, the church of Hallgrím, which is Iceland´s tallest church tower and then Café Loki, which is in the vicinity were you can try some of the manyfold Icelandic culinary specialities.
Also you´re taken on a stroll down Skólavörðustígur and given insigths into where to buy woolen sweaters and the shop 12 tónar, where you´ll find some extraordinary Icelandic music.
You´re shown Harpa, the venue of Iceland´s best music life, the home of the Icelandic Symphony and Opera and it is also a.o. home of Air Waves.
The tour takes you to the harbour and on a whale watching tour and shows you the various eat-outs in that area. You´re shown some great walking tours within Reykjavík a.o. to the beach but believe it or not a.o. some of the passtimes of the locals is to swim in the icecold sea in Nauthólsvík.
You´re shown one of the finest hotels in Reykjavík the 4 star Hilton Nordica. It´s pointed out to you that you can take a day´s tour from the hotel and that it´s amazing how much you can actually see in only 1 day! For example you can drive the „Golden Circle,” which consists of 3 highlights: The Thingvellir National Park, The Geothermal Geysir area where you can see spouting hotsprings and then thirdly the beautiful waterfall, Gullfoss (Icelandic for Golden Waterfall Gull = Gold and Foss= Waterfall). By Geysir you can experience eating geothermically cooked bread, which simply is burried in the ground and cooks for 24hrs at 80° Celsius.
You´re shown typical stretches of long beaches with black sand, which originate from many of the volcanic erruptions that Iceland has endured over the centuries.
Then it is suggested that you see at least once in your lifetime the Northern Lights or the Aurora Borealis as it´s name is in Latin. They are mainly visible from september to march.
Then there is always the option to take one of Icelandair´s inland airplanes to the various towns all over Iceland for example Ísafjörður í the western part af Iceland, Akureyri in the North and from there you can explore some of Iceland´s most beautiful natural gems and a day tour in Akureyri is highly suggested.
You can also travel out of the country whereas only a 2 hr. flight away from Iceland to the north, you can visit Greenland.
In the end your given a lesson on how to pronounce Eyjafjallajökull!
Well, but wait NO Golf???? Somehow Icelandair seems to have overlooked the latest attraction to foreigners who visit Iceland – it´s Iceland´s 65 golf courses. Golf is the 2. most popular sport in Iceland.
Let alone in Reykjavík and surroundings there are 10 beautiful courses you can choose from – and you can also rent a car and take the ferry to the Westmanna Islands or even make it simpler fly; with Icelandair to the islands and play one of the most unique golfcourse in the world there; The Westmanna Islands golf course.
And another suggestion: fly with Icelandair to Höfn í Hornafjörður in the east of Iceland and play golf on the 9 hole Silfurnes golf course with a beautiful view on the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull. The course might surprise you, but in any case the view is breathtaking.
The towns mentioned in the video Ísafjörður and Akureyri both have beautiful golfcourses and Akureyri actually boasts of having 3, despite only one 18 hole course.
Iceland has alot to offer and you can use the above video to make up your own dream tour to Iceland – and if its only a short visit make sure to come again and again.
You´ll at least have 65 reasons to come to Iceland: each and every single golf course in Iceland! Have you played them all? I bet most of your golfing buddies haven´t – so you would have something to brag about when you return… even if you only played a few of them!
